You say you love art. How many artworks do you own?

Tell any of your friends about an upcoming art exhibition and they will exclaim “Oh, how cool, I love art!”.

Open an Instagram feed and you will see images of so called “art lovers” posting from “Art Basel” or “Scope Miami”.

Being interested in art and demonstrating affection for contemporary artworks is sort of a trend nowadays. But I am wondering, how many artworks do such “art lovers” actually own? From my own experience — one or two max, and one of them is either inherited from a grandma or something they have painted themseves during holiday or at the local art course :D

Seriously, do you know a music lover who has never been to a concert or bought a record?

I think being really passionate about art is not about selfies from a trendy art fair. It is about living FOR ART and WITH ART. It is about surrounding yourself with art. It is about collecting and supporting artists you admire (not just drinking free wine at their exhibition openings).

But maybe I should not be so sarcastic and judge people who try to position themselves as art lovers. The process of buying art has always been mystified by headlines about high auction prices and hardly comprehensive texts written by art experts (as if you need a doctoral degree to understand what is it you like :).

I contemplated on this subject for a while and came up with 5 myths that stop people from buying art. Here they are in this video. Feel free to share it with your art loving friends :)
